About the role | Mo te tunga

This role, based in the Northern Region, seeks to further enhance the Department's suite of prison-based education and training services to more effectively realise the educational, employment, and rehabilitative outcomes associated with quality education, which we know can support reduced reoffending.

The Practice Manager Education and Training will provide the Northern Region with the strategic leadership, subject matter expertise, and frontline best-practice advice to improve the overall quality and effectiveness of prison-based education services.

The Practice Manager Education and Training will be actively responsible for leading the development and implementation of education improvement strategies and will work closely regional operational performance teams to help drive regional service performance.

We are interested in candidates who possess the following:


Experience as a leader amongst educational professionals, with a focus on education service design, development, management, and the implementation of excellent practice.
Experience in successfully designing and implementing educational improvement strategies across an organisation resulting in improved educational outcomes.
A strong understanding of the New Zealand tertiary education sector and the New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
Both a theoretical and practical understanding of what works for adult learning, particularly for those who may have disengaged from education at an early age.
An understanding of how education and training can support improved employment outcomes, ensuring that learners can acquire those skills most demanded by employers.
Strong stakeholder management skills, including the ability to influence vertically and horizontality across the business and the ability to credibility engage with the senior management of external education service providers.
A strong, evidence-based understanding as to what works for Maori within education and training, and how culturally responsive pedagogy is crucial for improved engagement and achievement.
