Il Buco on Ponsonby Rd is our #1 all-time favourite. They do traditional Roman pizza by the slice with a good selection of vegetarian and vegan options, and all their meat is free range. And their hot chocolate is to die for!

Others I recommend are...

Gina's Italian Kitchen in Symonds St is run by boisterous, rowdy Italians. Especially recommended for special occasions, birthdays, etc. Make sure the staff know it's a special occasion and they will make a real fuss of you. Not for shy people though, because the fuss is very loud and public!

Dante's Pizzeria in Ponsonby Central, definitely.

Calimero in Long Drive, St Heliers. They’ve been there for 25 years, which says it all.

I haven't been to Al Volo but it was included in a NZ Herald top 5 list, as was Sette Bello in New Lynn and Epolito's at 166 Richmond Rd, Grey Lynn. Il Buco and Dante’s were also on the list.

The Italian Job in Jervois Rd, Herne Bay is generally better than some of those already mentioned. Dante's at Ponsonby Central and Kumeu is excruciatingly authentic but pricy and doesn't sell anything un-Neapolitan (which is fine by me, but will disappoint those who want rubbish like bits of pineapple soiling their pizzas.)

No, no, no. The only official Neapolitan Pizza in NZ is Dante's Pizza. Luckily for those of us who would drive out to Huapai for it, it's now in Ponsonby Central! You simply cannot get better pizza in NZ. Get in quick though, they're artisan's and when they run out each day, they run out.

Sal's for New York style pepperoni. Al Volo (top of Mt Eden Rd) does a great thin crust. Il Bucco on Ponsonby Rd for great square slice. Mama Rosa (Kohimarama) also does a great pepperoni & a lot less greasy than Sal's.
