Do you recommend I fly to AKL the night before my flight and stay at an airport hotel or would I be safe to fly the same day from Wellington to AKL? Is Jetstar reliable?

I will be in Wellington and plan to fly to AKL on Jetstar. I have a midnight departure from AKL to my next destination. Do you recommend I fly to AKL the night before my flight and stay at an airport hotel or would I be safe to fly the same day from Wellington to AKL? Is Jetstar reliable? I do not want to miss my AKL flight because Jetstar had issues or cancels the flight. I have never flown with Jetstar before but sometimes LCC aren’t so reliable!

What time of year?

Done peole have never had issues with Jetstar, others have had delays, cancellations, missed connections...

Wellington can be a very windy airport, both airports can be fog- bound.

As above - I regularly fly Jetstar & have never had a problem. If either airport is fog-bound NZ will also be affected. I agree that there is slightly more risk with JQ simply because they don't have the fleet size to bring in another aircraft (or as happened once to me recently with NZ, another pilot to replace one who called in sick).

If you can, book your flights as a connecting flight (e.g. WLG > AKL > LAX) rather than as two separate flights (e.g. WLG > AKL, AKL> LAX). If your flight into Auckland is delayed and you miss your connecting flight, then it's the airline's responsibility to get you on the next available flight to your destination. It can also work out cheaper buying them as a connecting flight than buying them separately.

Follow-up.....Since I already had my AKL to HNL flight booked I decided to play it safe and booked a noon flight with Air New Zealand for $179 (not much more than Jetstar). The flight was on schedule and since my HNL flight didn’t leave until midnight I had an 11 hour layover in AKL. Other than that everything went smoothly. Thank you for your opinions on Jetstar and helping me make a decision on this.

Air NZ is pretty much a low cost carrier too for domestic and short haul flights, you have to pay for everything except a coffee and cookie. But they are usually a more reliable option because they usually operate more daily flights on each route.
